London
Centuries of arrivals have made London a city of neighbourhood histories, shared traditions and global voices.
01 / LONDON
History & heritage
London began as the Roman settlement of Londinium in the first century CE. Over centuries it grew into a centre of trade and government, then into the capital of a global empire. That history includes colonial exploitation as well as the movement of people who built new lives in the city. The post-war arrival of Caribbean migrants aboard the Empire Windrush in 1948 became a defining symbol of modern Britain's diaspora story.
Communities with roots in Africa, South Asia, the Middle East, Europe and beyond have shaped London's streets, businesses, politics and cultural institutions. The city is not one story but many, told in different languages from borough to borough.

Culture & community
Notting Hill Carnival grew out of Caribbean community organising and is now one of the world's great street celebrations. South Asian arts, African music, Arab food, Jewish heritage and countless other traditions sit alongside older London institutions. Markets, theatres, religious spaces and independent venues keep these cultures visible and evolving.
A journey through the city can take in Brixton, Southall, Chinatown, Whitechapel and many more places where local identity and global heritage meet.

Sport & movement
The London Marathon began in 1981 and is known for its crowds, charity fundraising and landmark-lined course. London also hosted the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Everyday running lives in its parks and along the Thames, while football, cricket and community sport bring neighbours together across the city.
London's example is a reminder that sport can open public space to people of different backgrounds. No Diaspora Marathon race date or course has been announced for London.
